Finishing Up For 2016

I return to Guanajuato for the winter on November 1.  The garage construction will be *mostly* complete.  Next year I will install the soffits and touch-up the paint.  I may not get the garage doors done this year either.

I´ve been working on the cedar siding.  It goes on quickly but the painting before hand takes time.  I have one wall remaining to do.g3 g2 g1On the inside I have three walls covered with plywood and have just started the ceiling.  I had to figure out how to (safely) raise and nail the plywood sheets by myself.  So far so good but nailing upside-down is tiring.g4

Over The Hump

Today I leave to travel to Ontario to visit family and will return at the end of August.  Last Friday the garage passed its framing inspection and yesterday the first electrical inspection.  My priority now is to finished the exterior before returning to Mexico for the winter.

Roof Progress

p2

A friend came up from Vancouver to help with the roof sheathing.  We got it done in a couple of days.  Since then I have been making slow progress in between rain showers.  It’s a great year for the garden, for building, not so much.

Building the gable overhang was interesting and shingling the corners was an enigma.  Looking at the photo above you mught think the roof is done, not so.  I’m ready the complete the front when the rain stops.  After that the main part of the roof should go quickly (in nice weather).

Need a Roof

We are having a typical June, or perhaps a wetter one than normal.  Not only does it hinder progress but also gives me grief to see the materials drenched.

Putting the trusses in place with little help was tricky, as was positioning the fascia.  I don’t think I have made any significant errors but could do a better job next time.

The rain is supposed to stop so I started to sheath the roof.  Yesterday it rained all day and that put me in a bad mood.  The lower corners of the roof are a challenge.  Since the photo above I have turned the right corner.  Once I have the lower row of sheathing applied all around then at least the walls will be out of the rain.

The garage is starting to look like an impressive building.  One neighbour commented that it looked bigger than the house.  Not true but it will be the dominant feature from the street once completed.

Waiting for Trusses

progress

Finished framing and sheathing about a week ago.  The trusses are scheduled to arrive on May 31.  Installing the trusses is going to be a puzzle at first as I’m having a hard time understanding the engineering drawings.  Thank goodness for the Internet and YouTube.

Framing Progress

progreso

I let the new cement floor cure for a week then applied a sealer.  The materials for the walls arrived the next day and I started framing on Wednesday.  After three days the large walls are framed and in place.  Roof trusses have been ordered and will arrive in a few weeks, so I have lots of time to finish the framing and attach the sheathing.

Got it all dug out last week.  Today arrived a truck-load of crusher dust, I’m told an excellent compactible material for under the cement slab floor.  The weather today was perfect and I’m looking forward to working outside and finishing this step which is filling the space with five inches of compacted material.  I’ll have to rent a machine to do the compacting with.

Back in Garden Bay

The trip home was long and arduous.  It was a mistake to fly from Puerto Vallarta just to save a few pesos but when I booked I was open to spending a few days there before I flew home.

The weather here has been mostly cool and wet, another apparent mistake to have come home mid-March.  The forecast however is looking great for this week.

The house was mostly fine.  The deer got into the garden and ate some plants, nothing serious and it was easy to repair the breaches.  Goes to show that more fencing is required.  Received an order of 13 bare-root rose bushes and have them planted.  Six more are on their way.

I took me a few days to acclimatize and feel at home.  Yes I’m digging again to prepare for the garage floor.  Hoping to have the floor poured by the end of April and begin the fun part in May.
